Supporting young people in the local community

Over the past 2 years, Capita TI has been working tirelessly to support the young people in our surrounding areas. Based in Oldham, Greater Manchester, Capita TI is only too aware of the struggles faced by young people today, especially when it comes to the world of work and closing the skills gap.

Our journey began in 2014, when it became more apparent than ever that students were no longer recognising the value of language learning, and the number of students studying language subjects after the age of 16 was diminishing at a staggering rate.

It’s not just the responsibility of parents, teachers, friends and careers advisers to help students understand the importance of languages, but also those businesses involved in the profession on a daily basis.

Language Learning Road-show

Our Language Learning Road-show began. We visited colleges and universities such as Oldham Sixth Form College, Durham University, Lancaster University, Ashton Sixth Form College, Aston University and Manchester Metropolitan University. During these visits we presented to language students on the importance of continued learning, and the career opportunities available in the filed post-graduation. We have also sat on a variety of career’s panels, whereby students were given the opportunity to ask a variety of questions about the world of work, to the panel of employers from a variety of backgrounds. Most recently, we have also sponsored a student at Preston College as part of the International Women’s Day initiatives.

LIFT Language Programme

We have been working in close partnership with Oldham Sixth Form College over the past 18 months, particularly in conjunction with their LIFT language programme – for which they won an award back in 2013. We have been into the college to present, and have also welcomed students into our offices for tours, work-shadowing and careers workshops.

Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce

Capita TI is also working in close conjunction with the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce on their Young Chamber programme. The Young Chamber aims to put local businesses in contact with education providers, in an attempt to close the skills gap.

Careers Fairs are another fantastic way for us to showcase our business, and provide students with the information they need about opportunities for work after leaving school.

We have attended such events at Bolton College, Manchester Creative Media Academy, Lancaster University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Huddersfield.

Work Experience Placement

On the back of all of this, we have been able to offer local young people a variety of work-experience and internship placements. During the summer of 2015, we had 6 students of varying ages sit with different departments within Capita TI, to learn more about what goes on at a Language Service Provider. This initiative has continued into 2016, and we are taking on more interns than ever. We have also put 2 local young people through a Modern Apprenticeship programme, both of which were a great success.

Up-coming Events

Over the coming weeks we are also helping local youth centre, Mahdlo, with their careers days – performing mock-interviews and advice panels with their kids. We are also sitting on the judging panel of the Young Enterprise initiative in Oldham – acting as a Dragon in the Den for a handful of young entrepreneurs in the area.

This is just the beginning. At Capita TI we are passionate about helping young people to fulfil their potential, and recognise the importance of developing talent in the local area.

These initiatives have won us a place in the final of the Oldham Business Awards, and we can’t wait to meet with fellow businesses who share the same passion as us. Wish us luck!
