Asif joins us fresh from finishing his Master’s degree in Global Management, to complete a summer internship. He’s hoping to learn more about how marketing works in an international company, and what impact language has on business.
What’s your background?
Interestingly I actually have a Biomedical Science degree. Although I am completely fascinated with learning about the human body, I realised that I wanted a career path that allowed me to be creative, and I believe marketing would be perfect for me. I have just recently finished an MSc in Global Management where I learned about business on an international scale.
Why do you want to work in marketing?
After studying business on an international scale, it was imperative for me to understand what impact language can have on world business. In today’s climate, business truly speaks many languages something which I am hoping to learn from my time at Capita TI.
What do you love most about languages and marketing?
I love how languages can give an individual a sense of cultural belonging by sharing a common ground with millions of individuals around the world. Whilst I really love the fact that marketing gives me the chance to be creative, innovative and analytical, all at the same time.
What would you consider to be your biggest professional success?
During my time at Salford University, I was awarded the Student Unions’ Personality of the year award. It was an award that recognised all my hard work for the university, which involved being a student councillor, a chairperson for the hockey club and an activities assistant for the university.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I would love to be jetting around the world for an international company, in some form of a managerial role.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
The fact that it is a new day with new challenges, new experiences and new people to meet. And my mother also helps me!
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I am extremely passionate about sports, in particular, hockey and cricket. I currently play for Bowdon Hockey Club and also manage a local under 15’s team. During my summer seasons, I play cricket for my local club. Outside the sporting world, I am a lover of electronic music.
Do you speak any other languages?
Coming from a Pakistani household, I do in fact speak Urdu.
Who inspires you?
My parents, especially my father who has worked so hard to put me through private education. If it wasn’t for my parent’s belief, I certainly wouldn’t have achieved half of what I have achieved today.
Any tips for those wanting to learn another language?
Absolutely go for it. As one of the most multi-cultural countries in the world, it would be great if people made more of an effort to understand the other cultures around them and their ways of life. There has been a lot of tension in the UK and the power of language is something that can bring us closer.
