A day in the life of an Interpreting Service Delivery Team Leader

The scope of career opportunities available in the Languages Services industry extend further than just translating and interpreting roles and these roles are critical to the effective running of any Language Service Provider (LSP).

The next in our series of blogs on careers within the Language Services industry focuses on Service Delivery Team Leader, Amy Jones, and what she gets up to in her busy role.

Describe what you do on a day-to-day basis?

I have a very busy life at Capita Translation and Interpreting (Capita TI)! I monitor our team targets and performance and check that we deliver everything that we are supposed to on a daily basis. Through monitoring our team performance I am able to highlight areas where improvement is needed to ensure that we continuously hit and exceed our targets. I find that a big part of what I do is essentially motivating the team. My team are responsible for sourcing the right linguists for the right jobs across a range of contracts including the Ministry of Justice. Various languages are involved so it is vitally important that we meet the requirements of our customers.

Describe your journey through the industry and how you got to your job role.

I worked as a Senior Assigner and Service Delivery Co-ordinator for another Interpreting company when I finished University. My degree is in Business Management and I had never considered this industry when I graduated, but I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the industry and the range of people I interacted with. I then saw the opportunity to transfer my knowledge to Capita TI where I would be working on large contracts such as the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) which was very appealing. I applied and was offered the position as Team Leader within Service Delivery.

What are the most challenging aspects of your job and why?

Prioritising my workload is certainly challenging as this can change hourly and I can suddenly be pulled from my daily tasks to being heavily involved in a new booking that requires urgent attention. Also, ensuring that I am able to support my team to the best of my ability can be challenging, as I am the first point of contact for them and receive a lot of questions and queries.

What are your favourite aspects of your job and why?

I enjoy working with my team as we all work together really well and achieve fantastic results! Working in a productive team is really motivating and makes work enjoyable and is one of the main reasons why I enjoy my job so much.

What advice would you give to newcomers?

Do not rule out this industry if you have never considered it! People still assume this is a specialist industry where you must be multilingual to work in any role and this is simply not the case. From my experience it is a fast-paced, busy environment. We have a real buzz in the office and if you enjoy a challenge and have an intrinsic desire to achieve results you will thoroughly enjoy this industry.

What would you do if you weren’t a Service Delivery Team Leader?

I would most probably do something where I could be creative. I enjoy photography, interior design and have an interest in make-up!
