Charity and community engagement initiatives

Event: Business mentoring

Location: Oldham College

Date: 27/03/2018

Four of our staff have been volunteering as business mentors, as part of the Young Enterprise programme. The Oldham regional final was held at Oldham College, where 2 teams were chosen to progress to the Greater Manchester final.

Business Development Manager, Sarah, mentored Heavenly Homes – the team from Saddleworth School, who were one of the teams to progress to the next round, as well as winning the ‘Best Trade Stand’ award.

Sarah said: “It’s encouraging to see how far the students have come in this programme; from the first idea of them setting up a business, to the selling and finally at the presentation stage. Being a mentor you are able to advise them and answer questions on subjects that will be useful in doing business when they have left school.”

Head of Marketing, Jo, mentored Horizon Invictus, from Oldham Hulme Grammar School.

Jo said: “Business mentoring is such a great program to get involved in, and it’s great to watch the students develop over the duration of the course. Anyone can become a mentor, and offer some valuable skills to young people, and it certainly keeps you in touch with the youth of today, and helps you to understand what drives them and inspires them.”

Fiona, Digital Marketing Manager acted as a mentor for Socket Friends, the team from Oldham College.

Fiona said: “Programmes like this are a great way to nurture and encourage business skills in young people. Some students can find it difficult to transition from academic studies to the world of work, but Young Enterprise inspires students to discover more about sales, marketing, finance, branding and team work. I found the experience really rewarding – I felt that I had a positive impact on helping local students.”

Grace, Junior Account Manager, was a mentor for Pock Eco, from Oldham Sixth Form College.

Grace said: “I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering my time to support the group of young students progress with their business idea. Young Enterprise provided me with the opportunity to give something back to the college that I studied at during 2010-2012. The experience gave the students the opportunity to learn about the different aspects of running a business, as well as building their confidence, providing them with the chance to work in different departments and understanding the ups and downs that it takes to be part of such a fierce competition. I am extremely proud of the group of students that I mentored and wish them every success during their future careers.”

Jo said: “It felt so good to give something back to the local community and to support the hard work that goes on in our area. I’d recommend to all of my Capita colleagues that they take the opportunity to use their volunteer day every year, as the charity was so appreciative of our help.”

Katie said: “I was amazed at how well run the centre is and how hard the staff work to give the animals the best chance at finding their forever homes.  I was also amazed that I managed to come away without adopting one myself but if anyone is thinking of adopting a cat, I can definitely recommend a few!”

Feedback from staff was great, Vicki, Operations Manager said:

Event: Charity volunteering – RSPCA

Location: RSPCA Oldham

Date: 02/06/2017 & 16/06/2017

Linsey and Leah spent the day volunteering at RSCPA Oldham’s new animal shelter. On arrival, they were made very welcome and shown to the staff room for a coffee/tea and then given a locker to store personal items. Gavin the Maintenance Manager showed Linsey and Leah the area they were going to weed, which they got stuck into straight away…as there was a light at the end of all the weeds…looking after the dogs and cats!

Once they had pulled out all the weeds, bearing the stinging nettles which got them a couple of times, they then went on an adventure, walking 3 lovely King George Spaniels around the country park near the centre, which was a bit of a challenge as the dogs really wanted to speak (bark) at every other dog in the vicinity.

With the walk finished they then got to pamper the 24 cats and 1 kitten in care at the centre, by spending time with each in their individual temporary homes.

Linsey said: “Time flew by and the next thing I knew it was time to go home, but not before a little purchase in the centre gift shop for my grand-dog!”

Leah said: “I loved the cats so much, I’ve submitted an application to be a frequent volunteer!”

A couple of weeks later, Account Manager Gary and Operations Manager Bonnie also volunteered at the RSPCA’s new animal shelter in Strinesdale.

Gary said: “I really enjoyed the opportunity to be able to help out, but also play with the animals. I was really impressed with the hard work and dedication that the RSPCA puts into its facilitates and in caring for the animals, and have come away with a heightened sense of respect for the wonderful work they do on a daily basis. The experience was certainly an eye-opener for me, as well as being something I really enjoyed and valued.”

Bonnie said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my day at the RSPCA and felt as though we were supporting the team there, completing the tasks that they would like to spend time on but are not always able to due to other priorities. An enjoyable change of pace from the everyday and as a result, I am seriously considering adopting a second cat…”

Event: Charity volunteering – Dr Kershaw’s Hospice

Location: Dr Kershaw’s Hospice shop, Oldham

Date: 19/05/2017 & 26/05/2017

Nick and Matthew in our Interpreting Assigning team, spent the day at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, Royton, Oldham, as part of the Capita Volunteer Programme, which allows each member of staff one paid day per year to spend volunteering in the local community.

Nick and Matthew spent the day taking care of a stretch of garden that had previously been neglected due to other projects, and their tasks included weeding, treating the soil, re-arranging plants, clearing a path and generally making the area look cared for.

Matthew said: “Whilst we were at the hospice, we learnt a little about the cycle that takes place when someone enters it, and when we had finished, it felt really fulfilling to have been able to assist.”

Nick said: “It was a very special day for me to be able to spend time at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, as 10 years ago, it’s where my mum was cared for in her last few days of her battle with cancer.”

A couple of weeks later, Jessica and Tuğgen in our Project Management team also volunteered at the hospice.

Jessica said: “It was a very rewarding experience, people at the hospice are extremely nice and professional, they made us feel really good. Paul was in charge of giving Tuğgen and me the tasks for the day and he was lovely, he came a few time to check on us and brought us some cake. This experience really made me want to help and do things like this more often.”

Tuğgen said: “What a wonderful day we had. It was a priceless experience which I cannot wait to repeat next year. The hospice was majorly run by volunteers and it was amazing to become a part of this lovely team. Jessica and I painted the fences as we were fortunate enough with the British weather on the day. Our arms may still hurt today but our souls cry with joy in thinking that we have actually made a difference at Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.”

Vicky Richardson, Volunteer Manager at the hospice said, “Thanks so much for the help from your staff today, they have done a great job!”
